The former owner of a Berkeley County animal rescue center sentenced to probation for animal cruelty has been ordered to pay nearly $115,000 in restitution.
The amount is what the county says it spent caring for the 149 dogs seized from Mara Spade's shelter in 2006.
Spade, a 63-year-old Inwood resident, pleaded no contest in December to one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty.
A Berkeley County magistrate last month sentenced her to two years of probation and ordered her not to have contact with animals for five years.
Wednesday's restitution order was in response to a motion by the assistant prosecuting attorney.
Spade's attorney says his client is unhappy with the amount and plans to appeal to circuit court or withdraw the no contest plea.
