A tragic drowning at Sherando Lake has been confirmed by authorities.
Officials from the National Forest Service say a 71-year-old Maryland man died Wednesday, after struggling to swim ashore.
It happened around 12:30 p.m.
The man was trying to swim across the widest part of the lake.
Witnesses pulled him to shore and administered CPR while waiting for a rescue squad to respond.
Rescuers did arrive, but the man died before regaining consciousness.
His name has not been released at this time.
