Prince William County Executive Craig Gerhart says the county's illegal immigration crackdown will cost $520,000 more than anticipated in the coming budget year.

Gerhart is citing overcrowding at the county jail.

The increase raises the cost of the initiative to $6.9 million for the fiscal year that starts in July. The new policy requires county police to check the immigration status of anyone arrested, even for minor offenses, if they suspect the person might be in the country illegally.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart on Tuesday urged fellow supervisors to continue the program despite the cost and concerns that it is hurting the county's reputation.
