Students and residents came together on Court Square Friday in support of a border crossing scheduled for Saturday and for local immigrants in the Valley.
Virginia residents and immigrant justice activists are currently in Mexico, getting ready to cross the desert into Arizona without carrying government issued identification. The Virginia-based activist network, The People United, hopes to convey that enforcement at the border, and anti-immigrant policy in Virginia, doesn't make us safer.
Barbie Spitz says, "There's nothing really that separates them from us except the color of their skin and if that isn't racism to grant someone citizenship and rights simply because of the color of their skin or from where they're born then I don't know what is."
The crossing Saturday will formally end with demonstrations in Washington D.C., organized by the Immigrant Justice Organization, Mexicans Without Borders.

I was talking to a young man in a Latin American country. He told me that he was saving his money to come to the US. He told me about his family and then he said, "We don't have welfare here". It is costing us tax payers millions of dollars in welfare to illegals
I travel south of the border and like to talk to the local people. You people who support and hire illegals are supporting the increasing proverty south of the boulder. At first money is sent home but with the start of a new family in the US the money stops causing even more proverty. This is becoming a big problem.
First off, Mexican is not a race. For you more progressive liberals who want everyone to embrace the latino culture, I offer this: ninguna amnistía, criminales no agradables.
