A Virginia man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for murdering a West Virginia woman.
Twenty-three-year-old Jonathan Tillman of Woodstock was sentenced to life without parole in Putnam County Circuit Court on Friday.
Tillman pleaded guilty last month to first-degree murder. He admitted shooting 64-year-old Delores Bates after pulling into her Hurricane driveway July 8, 2001.
Tillman was captured the next day driving Bates' vehicle. He also pleaded guilty to burglary and grand larceny charges.
Tillman told police it was a random killing in what he wanted to be the beginning of a crime spree after he left his job at Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock. He graduated from the academy in 1997.
