During a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine told residents and members of the Suffolk City Council that state officials will lend a helping hand to the city as residents recover from a devastating tornado.

Kaine said the local response to the F-3 tornado was great. He said city officials set up a shelter soon after the tornado hit the area.

"When you see the magnitude of the physical damage to these neighborhoods," says Kaine, "The fact that a tornado of this size could come through in the heart of the day when so many people were home, or on the road, or in the shopping center right behind us, and there be no, at this point, significant injury or death is really nothing short of miraculous."

According to the Suffolk Fire Chief Mark Outlaw, there have been no deaths reported. There were about 200 injuries reported, but none life-threatening.
