A Waynesboro man is in custody on multiple charges including assaulting an officer and driving under the influence.

Officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 9:26 a.m. Tuesday for an assault that had just occurred at 901 4th Street at the Quadrangle Apts. Upon arrival officers found a 42-year-old Waynesboro female with a serious head wound. She was conscious and told officers that she had been hit in the head by her ex- boyfriend who had left the scene in a gold Dodge Dynasty, drunk and armed with a firearm.

After spreading a description of the vehicle and suspect, he was spotted driving erratically on the 1,300 block of North Delphine Avenue. Officers attempted to stop the suspect but he continued north on Delphine at speeds around 20-25 MPH and left the city limits.

The vehicle was followed on 340 North until it turned into Beagle Gap Subdivision where it was pinned in by police vehicles at the cul-de-sac on Whippoorwill Way. The suspect failed to obey orders to exit the car and was subsequently subdued and taken into custody.

While searching the vehicle, officers found a loaded handgun. The suspect, 42-year-old Sam Wesley Earhart of Waynesboro, faces the following charges:

- Felony eluding

- Felony DUI

- Refusal to take a breath test

- Felony driving after having been declared a habitual offender

- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

- Felony assault on a police officer (Earhart spat on an officer after being taken into custody).

The victim was taken to Augusta Medical Center where medical personnel determined she had been shot. She was transferred to UVA in stable condition.

Waynesboro Police are still investigation this shooting and the circumstances surrounding it.

Good coverage on this tragic story. My son, Michael works at Quadrangle Apts. and was the one to see what was going on, he said SOMETHING just told him to look up from what he was doing. He and the manager then went down to see what was going on. The manager told my son to go back and call 911 when they saw the victim being beaten. After the man fled, the victim told my son she had been trying to yell for him, so he would see what was going on, but the words wouldn't come out. Maybe my son picked up on those vibes. (?) Anyway, lets hope the woman survives without damage. I think both the manager and my son should be recognized by someone for their bravery. They risked their own lives. Here in Ohio the police periodically recognize heroes. Is there anything of that sort there?
