A Waynesboro man is in custody on multiple charges including assaulting an officer and driving under the influence.
Officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 9:26 a.m. Tuesday for an assault that had just occurred at 901 4th Street at the Quadrangle Apts. Upon arrival officers found a 42-year-old Waynesboro female with a serious head wound. She was conscious and told officers that she had been hit in the head by her ex- boyfriend who had left the scene in a gold Dodge Dynasty, drunk and armed with a firearm.
After spreading a description of the vehicle and suspect, he was spotted driving erratically on the 1,300 block of North Delphine Avenue. Officers attempted to stop the suspect but he continued north on Delphine at speeds around 20-25 MPH and left the city limits.
The vehicle was followed on 340 North until it turned into Beagle Gap Subdivision where it was pinned in by police vehicles at the cul-de-sac on Whippoorwill Way. The suspect failed to obey orders to exit the car and was subsequently subdued and taken into custody.
While searching the vehicle, officers found a loaded handgun. The suspect, 42-year-old Sam Wesley Earhart of Waynesboro, faces the following charges:
- Felony eluding
- Felony DUI
- Refusal to take a breath test
- Felony driving after having been declared a habitual offender
- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
- Felony assault on a police officer (Earhart spat on an officer after being taken into custody).
The victim was taken to Augusta Medical Center where medical personnel determined she had been shot. She was transferred to UVA in stable condition.
Waynesboro Police are still investigation this shooting and the circumstances surrounding it.
