Red Front Supermarket in Harrisonburg is celebrating 50 years on Chicago Avenue this month.

Saturday's events included an appearance by the giant Turkey Hill Cow.

Mangers say locally owned stores like Red Front are an important part of the community.

"A very diminishing thing, but very glad for all the folks that continue to support red front and have for so many years," says general manager John Garber. "And this is just another way to give back."

Red Front will continue its anniversary events throughout the month.
