An Augusta County man faces 13 counts of credit card fraud after authorities say he stole a credit card and used it to buy gas.
The owners of the Staunton Junction gas station say they haven't had a gas drive-off in nearly two months, which is surprising considering the rising prices and desperation of motorists.
Owner AJ Madhani says, "You know, whenever they're done filling it up, I usually check on the TV inside and make sure they are coming inside to pay for the gas, because you have more chances at these prices for drive-offs and all."
Another thing the gas station does is require anyone who uses a credit card to pay for gas to go inside to use the card. That way, they can verify the signature on the card and make sure they know exactly who is using credit cards to pay for gas.
Augusta County Sheriff's office investigator, Lt. Glenn Hanger, says it's not uncommon for people to use stolen credit cards for gas in a way similar to what David Frazier allegedly did. However, he adds gas stations are increasing enforcement.
Hanger says, "The clerks are a lot more diligent with who’s on the lots, who’s paying, who’s not, tag numbers, that type of thing."
Madhani says he will keep his eye on his customers and their credit cards, because he can't afford to lose any money with prices so high.
Madhani adds, "It's a tough time for our customers and for us also."
