Bicyclists aren't the only ones who need to think about safety. Motorcyclists are also being cautioned to take it easy on the roads.
Last year 126 motorcycle deaths occurred on Virginia roadways. State police say most crashes happen because of a lack of common safe practices, such as maintaining safe distances, wearing a helmet and obeying the speed limit.
Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. Bryan Hutcheson says, "We're coming up on the good weather. It's getting ready to be summer time and nice afternoons and so forth. Just be aware that there's more and more out there, there's more now than ever, and just be alert that these motorcycles are out there. You can't see them as easily as you can see larger vehicles, so just be on the lookout for them."
Hutcheson also advises that new riders take motorcycle safety classes to improve their skills. Gov. Tim Kaine has proclaimed May to be Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
