The National Park Service is acquiring two parcels of private land for $1.1 million to provide public access to the Gauley River.

The purchase price was set by the Nature Conservancy, based on an independent appraisal commissioned by the conservancy.

The deal announced Thursday includes a 117-acre tract called Woods Ferry and a 3-acre tract called Mason Branch in Nicholas County. Both properties are located within the boundaries of the Gauley River National Recreation Area.

New River Gorge National River Superintendent Don Striker says the acquisition will ensure public access to the river for commercial whitewater outfitters, private boaters, kayaks, canoes, fishermen and hikers.
