Local people may have heard artillery fire around New Market this past weekend in celebration of the 144th anniversary of the Civil War battle.

About 2,000 Civil War re-enactors took part in the Battle of New Market reenactment.

The event is the oldest battle reenactment in the nation and one of the few at the original site.
