Governor Manchin says he won't interfere in the leadership crisis at West Virginia University.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, Manchin said he'll instead rely on the Board of Governors to do what it thinks is right to heal divisions created by a master's degree scandal involving his daughter. He also pointed out that while he appoints many board members, they do not serve at his will.

Two recent faculty votes have demanded that WVU President Mike Garrison resign over a degree awarded to Manchin's daughter, Heather Bresch, a longtime friend of Garrison's.

Garrison has steadfastly refused to step down.

The conflict involves the administration's decision to give Bresch an executive master's of business administration degree she didn't earn.

While the panel that investigated the degree found no evidence that Garrison directly interfered, it said the presence of his key staff at the decision-making meeting created "palpable" pressure.

The Board of Governors met Monday to discuss an undisclosed personnel issue.
