Many politicians now turn to the Internet to push their campaigns. One local senator has found himself at the center of a YouTube ad targeting him and his practices.
A Charlottesville man has put up videos called "Hanger's Closet" on the Web site YouTube. They're videos of Senator Emmett Hanger with creative captions questioning some of the things he says and does.
One of the videos depicts the chaos at a recent meeting for Republicans in Augusta County and it shows how Hanger got involved.
Keith Drake, the man behind the videos, says, "The purpose of 'Hanger's Closet' is to bring to light some of the back-door politicking that goes on on the Republican side in Augusta County and across the Commonwealth."
A longtime supporter of the Republican Party, Drake says this is not a smear campaign against Hanger. Drake says he's witnessed the senator make negative remarks about people inside of his own party, and he wants the public to know about it.
Drake adds, "It is certainly biased. It is certainly telling one side of the story. He has equal opportunity to tell his side, but you know a lot of what it comments on are things you're not going to see in the mainstream media."
While Hanger has not yet seen the videos, he did make a comment about the situation.
He says, "I find myself having to monitor the activities of individuals that are out there that just seem not interested in advancing particular policy positions but rather basically an assault on my reputation and character."
Hanger also says he thinks actions like those of Drake are tearing apart the Republican Party. Drake says he's considering putting up more videos of Hanger or any other politician he thinks needs to be exposed.
