The former president of a volunteer fire department in Harrisonburg will serve prison time for embezzling as much as 300-thousand dollars.
A Rockingham County Circuit Court judge sentenced Leon Stevens
[Thursday] to 31 years in prison. The judge suspended all but two
years and gave Stevens five years of supervised probation.
Stevens was president of Harrisonburg Volunteer Fire Department
Company Number One for three years, and his wife, Stephanie, was
treasurer. The judge suspended her entire 16-year sentence. Stephanie
Stevens was given five years of supervised probation.
They pleaded guilty in May. Under a plea agreement, the Stevenses will pay the volunteer fire department 150-thousand dollars. Prosecutors say that so far, the defendants have paid ten thousand dollars of that.
