The Food and Drug Administration is alerting consumers to a salmonella outbreak among certain types of raw, red tomatoes.
Following the FDA's advisory, Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets decided to pull red roma tomatoes and organic round tomatoes from their shelves Monday.
The FDA says there have been 145 reported cases of Salmonella Saintpaul since mid-April. They say it's an uncommon type of salmonella.
Managers at the Martin's in Harrisonburg say it's not likely they have any of the affected tomatoes, but they are going to stop serving tomatoes with their hoagies as a precaution starting Tuesday.
Martin's managers say overall it's a small percentage of tomatoes that are affected by this move.
"There are many tomatoes that are still available for sale in the store that are certainly safe for consumption," says Tracy Pawelski, a representative of the grocery chain.
Illnesses have been reported in 16 states, including Virginia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported 23 hospitalizations and no deaths.
According to the FDA's preliminary research, raw red plum, raw red Roma, or raw round red tomatoes are the likely cause of the outbreak.
McDonald's stopped serving sliced tomatoes at its locations nationwide as a precaution. They'll continue to serve grape tomatoes in salads because the FDA does not believe they are affected.
So far the FDA has not established the source responsible for the outbreak.
