The Food and Drug Administration is alerting consumers across the country about a salmonella outbreak in certain tomatoes, but many restaurants in Staunton are continuing to serve red tomatoes despite the warning.
Raw, red tomatoes haven't been added to the recall list just yet, so many local restaurants are sticking to their guns.
Alisa Norcross, at Beverley Restaurant, says, "They haven't had any problems yet, and they're from Georgia and South Carolina. So right now I'm just letting the customer decide."
John Huggins at Shenandoah Pizza went so far as to change where they get their tomatoes.
He says, "I just checked into it and I think it costs a little more to get them in, but you've got to do what you've got to do when you're in the fresh pizza business."
While some have made calls, the stores that continue to serve tomatoes say they're waiting to hear from the Staunton-Augusta Health Department for the official decision.
Michael "Mac" McMahan with the Health Department says he has called restaurants.
McMahan says, "We have 900 restaurants. We are contacting restaurants. I'm not saying we're getting to all of them. However, we also know a lot about the menus at our restaurants, but we don't necessarily know all of them that serve tomatoes."
He says the providers and distributors are a key factor to making sure your tomatoes are safe, but it's still an ongoing investigation with the FDA.
McMahan says, "I think at last count, just this afternoon, there was a 163 cases nationally, 23 or 24 of those cases have lead to hospitalizations."
So far, two cases of salmonella infection have been reported in Virginia. The FDA urges anyone with questions to contact their local health department or where they purchased the tomatoes.
