A second, smaller fire broke out Monday night in the Great Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge as storm winds scattered the flames.
A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services spokeswoman says the new fire spans about 20 acres. Another 2,460-acre fire has been burning for more than a week, mostly in the Virginia portion of the refuge.
Firefighters on Tuesday focused efforts on preventing the smaller fire from growing. More than 320 firefighters were on the scene, and officials say the fire was about 20 percent contained.
Officials say the bigger fire reached 70 percent containment Tuesday and was expected to stay at that level for some time.
The refuge covers 110,000 acres in Virginia and North Carolina.
