In Waynesboro some roads were also closed due to flooding.
Residents in low lying areas were advised to leave because the South River was flooding. But many opted to get sand bags and tough it out.
"I have been here 29 years and I have seen it worse than it is tonight I think the way it is going now, the worst of it is over," said Michael Gray who lives in Waynesboro. The South River crested about a foot above flood level, but the water has receded.
