In Iraq, it turns out one of the most recent hostages is not only American, but from nearby. Tom Fox is from Clear Brook, just north of Winchester.
A Virginia man is one of the four Western peace activists being held hostage in Iraq. The hostages that were shown in a video on Al-Jazeera is said to be part of a new wave of kidnappings police fear is aimed at disrupting next month's elections. Those being held captive are members of the Chicago-based aid group Christian Peacemaker Teams. The group has confirmed they disappeared Saturday.
Christian Peacemaker Teams identified the other hostages as Clear Brook, Virginia-resident Tom Fox. Fox, who's 54 and has two children, has worked for the past two years with the group in partnership with Iraqi human rights organizations. A Quaker for 22 years, the group says Fox was in Iraq seeking a "more complete understanding of Islamic cultural richness." And they say he is committed to telling the truth to US citizens about the war and its effects on Iraqi civilians.
