Gov. Joe Manchin plans to ask lawmakers for an additional $5 million to help keep West Virginia school buses rolling.

Because of the rapid increase in diesel prices, the state's 55 county school systems are having to tap into other funds to cover fuel bills.

West Virginia's schools are closed for the summer, but state Department of Education Transportation Director Ben Shew says counties developed their budgets when fuel was $2 cheaper.

The request for additional money is one of several items Manchin will have on next week's special legislative session agenda.

Manchin spokeswoman Lara Ramsburg says a complete agenda should be available on Monday.
