Severe weather caused problems up and down the Valley this past weekend, and rainfall totals are surprisingly high. One area that really got pounded was New Market where residents battled a flood that even threatened Interstate 81.

Storm clouds sent several feet of water through one neighborhood where residents weren't expecting it.

Janet Ryan, who's yard was flooded, says, "I just could not believe it when I looked out to the side of my yard because I have not seen that much water in a long time."

Ryan says it's actually been about 25 years since the creek behind their house overflowed. She remembers listening to the storm.

She says, "It was just getting harder and then I noticed the hail on the window, and then I noticed the traffic slowing up."

Pat Trimble, Fire Marshal with Rockingham County Fire and Rescue, says, "This is just so much water, excessive water. It almost closed the Interstate down, as well as come several inches from closing the Interstate down."

Trimble says the storm only lasted about a half hour and they were lucky it didn't go longer.

"We had a large amount of rainfall," says Trimble. "I think it was around an inch and eight-tenths. We had on the rain gauge over in Tenth Legion area just west of here, and the rolling hills and the way the water runs, it all comes this way."

No injuries have been reported at this time. However, with a chance of thunderstorms this week, emergency crews say they're on standby for similar incidents.
