A Harrisonburg program aimed at helping second to fifth-graders who speak little or no English.
Still in the planning phase, the newcomers program will be for students who come to school in the middle of the year.
It will prepare them to join other students who are already in limited English proficiency classes. Students get reading, math and science instruction.
"It's an excellent idea and it is really one whose time has come because the number of new comers we have coming in and the fact that we really want them to be successful as soon as they come in the door," says Spotswood Elementary School Principal Ann Conners.
The city hopes to have it up and running for at Spotswood Elementary School for all city students by Jan. 20.
