Three Winchester police officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing in a fatal Christmas Day shooting.

Lt. Tim Rice and officers Christine Gittins and Hal Christensen have returned to duty after being placed on paid administrative leave after the shooting.

Investigators say the officers were justified in firing their weapons at 37-year-old James "Fuzz" Jackson of Martinsburg, West Virginia.

On the day of the shooting, officers were looking for another man wanted for a probation violation.

Gittins saw a man matching the violator's description, who ran when she approached him. The officers pursued the man, who turned out to be Jackson. When cornered, Jackson drew a gun and pointed it at the officers.

Officials declined to say yesterday whether Jackson's gun was fired during the incident.
