Faced with rising wholesale gas prices, Columbia Gas of Virginia has raised its rates.
The 7.5 percent increase announced Thursday is Columbia's second this winter and reflects increasing wholesale gas costs nationwide. The Chesterfield County-based utility raised its rates in December by 11.6 percent.
The wholesale price of gas has roughly doubled from this time last year.
Harsher winter weather, which has increased demand for gas for heating, accounts for part of the higher gas prices. Columbia reported that the temperature in its service territory in January was 11 percent colder than normal.
Columbia serves 205,000 customers in the counties of Augusta, Chesterfield, Culpeper, Dinwiddie, Fairfax, Fauquier, Isle of Wight, Mecklenburg, Prince George, Rockingham, Spotsylvania and Stafford.
