Plans are moving forward for the development of the Stonewall Jackson Hotel in Staunton. A deal between the Persinger family, the city and a developer was announced Friday.
With the approval of the City Council, the 79-year-old hotel will be renovated into a more modern hotel and conference center. It will feature 120 rooms, 11,000 square feet of conference space and its ballroom will be preserved.
Total cost is expected to run more than $19 million. The city would pay almost $10 million of that.
"It will provide community meeting space which we don't have today in the central business district," said Bill Hamilton of the Economic Development Office. It will create new tax revenues in the future to help fund other city serves and attract conference business which we can't get today."
If approved, construction is scheduled to start in April and be completed in the spring of 2004.
