Youth Exercise Important

It's a way to keep youngsters healthier in the long run.

For two days a week, kids between the ages of three and nine are fine-tuning their bodies at the Staunton-Augusta YMCA. The four-week class focuses on health and overall fitness, with emphasis on flexibility, strength and aerobic workouts. Its goal is to make fitness fun for the kids in an effort to mold healthier lifestyles. It's recommended that children receive at least 30 minutes of exercise each day and with obesity rates on the rise, remaining active is vital to keep your kids healthy longer.

"So if we can get the kids into programs now in the school systems and community then they are less likely to be overweight as adults and exhibit those risk factors of diabetes, heart disease and various cardiovascular diseases," says YMCA fitness director Issac Coffey.
