Black ice can easily form causing a dangerous situation for drivers, with the snow melting, water forms puddles in the road and freezes. Police and VDOT are warning you to be careful if you have to drive at night or early in the morning. You need to watch your speed.
Sgt. Dean Zullig of the Virginia State Police says, "The biggest danger with black ice is it's usually unperceivable. Most people are traveling at normal operating speeds and they come upon black ice there insufficient time to react to that."
Sgt. Zullig says bridges usually freeze first because they reach the temperature of the surrounding air faster.
