Officials say wind over the last few days are causing trouble for firefighters battling a growing spot fire in the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.
The larger fire that has burned more than 4,000 acres since it started June 9 was considered 100 percent contained until Friday. That's when a storm spread flames outside containment lines.
Larry Helmerick, a spokesman for the command team fighting the fire, says crews tried to contain the spot fire, which grew to about 200 acres over the weekend. But winds on Sunday and Monday helped it grow by as much as another hundred acres.
The refuge covers 110,000 acres in Virginia and North Carolina.
