Virginia's unemployment rate went up one-half of a percentage point to 3.8 percent in May.

The Virginia Employment Commission said Wednesday the increase from April's rate of 3.3 percent reflects an influx of college graduates entering the job market during the May reporting period.

The state rate was below the national jobless rate for May of 5.2 percent.

All ten metropolitan areas reported higher unemployment. The largest, northern Virginia, saw unemployment increase from 2.5 percent in April to 2.9 percent in May. That still was the lowest jobless rate among metropolitan areas.

The Danville area's 7.1 percent in May was the highest.
