The world's largest poultry breeder has lost a building holding turkeys, eggs and equipment in a fire at its facility in Greenbrier County.

Officials with Aviagen Turkeys declined Thursday to say how many turkeys and eggs were destroyed in Wednesday's early morning fire at one of the Organ Cave-area breeding farm's buildings.

Aviagen says the 10,000-square-foot building held a large tom barn, egg holding room, shower facilities and equipment storage.

There are approximately 10,000 hens in the remaining three buildings.

Spokeswoman Sandi Hofmann says at any one time, there are about 12,000 birds on the farm. Much of the turkey breeding stock in the U.S. and throughout the world comes from that farm.

There's no word yet on the cause of the fire.
