A swimmer from the Valley, hoping for a trip to the Summer Olympics in Beijing, will have to wait until Saturday for her final chance to qualify.

Sara Smith of McGaheysville competed in the 100-meter freestyle Thursday night at the trials in Omaha, Nebraska. Smith attended Spotswood High School and is currently a student at Virginia Tech.

Smith swam the race in 56.17 seconds in the opening round. That was better than 70 of the competitors. However, it was not fast enough to qualify for the semi-finals. Nearly 100 athletes were attempting to qualify in the that event.

Smith will get her second chance to qualify for the Olympics on Saturday, with the 50-meter freestyle.
