Some Harrisonburg Police officers spent the evening of the Fourth of July looking for drunk drivers.

Police held DUI checkpoints at two different intersections Friday night. At the intersection of Norwood Street and Hawkins Street, about 35 vehicles were checked in one hour. Luckily, none of those drivers were drunk.

The final numbers have not yet been released for the four-hour operation. The checkpoints are an effort to curb drinking and driving and encourage people to wear seat belts and follow traffic rules.

"People really need to think," says Sgt. William Keller, with Harrisonburg Police. "If they're going to be out partying, they need to keep in mind that when they get in a vehicle, they shouldn't have been drinking."

Keller adds that there are many alternatives to driving under the influence, such as having a designated driver, taking Harrisonburg's public transit, or a taxi.
