A 42-year-old Florida woman was killed Tuesday morning at a truck stop along Interstate 81 near Winchester when she was hit by a tractor-trailer and dragged across the parking lot.

State Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell says the woman, whose name has not been released, was apparently trying to help direct another truck driver at a parking space when a big rig struck her and dragged her 194 feet. The accident happened just before 8:30 a.m.

Caldwell says the truck driver, 66-year-old Donald Rothman, of Staten Island, New York, has been charged with reckless driving.

Caldwell says that State Police met with Flying J truck stop officials last week to address traffic congestion and parking problems at the I-81 truck stop. She says there are similar problems along all of Virginia's roads.
