The Valley battlefields have been designated among the most endangered in the nation. That's according to Civil War Preservation Trust's Annual Report. The group says the culprit is expansion plans for Intersate 81. It has spent millions of dollars on hundreds of acres of battlefield land in the Valley and has a six-point proposal called "Reasonable Solutions." It says the plan will improve traffic flow and safety without generating sprawl. Kim Sandum, the President of the Community Alliance for Preservation says Rockingham County has a lot to lose with the VDOT proposal. She says the county is one of only two places where they want to build lanes on new locations. "They wouldn't be putting it in the median, they wouldn't be putting in the current right of way, along the fence where you see fences on Interstate 81, it would literally be another freeway in Rockingham County," says Sandum. "We believe that $13 billion proposal will not only damage the battlefields in the Valley of Virginia and compromise them tremendously, but we also think it's going to diminish if not destroy the quality of life that the people of the Shenandoah Valley enjoy right now," says Jim Lighthizer, president of Civil War Preservation Trust. Lighthizer says if you are against VOT's proposals for I-81, you should voice your opinions with your elected officials.
