West Virginia residents will have seven months to practice dialing ten-digit numbers when placing local telephone calls.

Voluntary ten-digit dialing begins July 26 and ends February 28. After that, it's mandatory once the state adds a second area code.

The new 681 area code will be assigned to new telephone lines and services beginning March 28.
