West Virginia University President Mike Garrison will leave the university after he steps down as president on September 1.

The university's Board of Governors on Tuesday unanimously approved on a voice vote an agreement under which Garrison will leave WVU. Details of the agreement weren't revealed.

Board Chairman Steve Goodwin says Garrison won't be an employee of WVU after he steps down as president.

Garrison announced at the board's last meeting in June that he would step down to end the controversy surround the awarding of a master's degree to the governor's daughter.

Also Tuesday, the board elected Carolyn Long as its new chairman and Drew Payne as vice chairman.
