President Mike Garrison will leave West Virginia University for good September 1, dropping an earlier plan to remain as a consultant.

The WVU Board of Governors announced Friday it had reconsidered the previous offer.

Garrison said Friday he agreed the September 1 time frame is in the university's best interest.

The new agreement calls for Garrison to become an adviser on the transition to new leadership August 1. That's the day interim President C. Peter Magrath officially takes over.

Garrison remains an employee only through August 31. His original contract was good through June 30, 2010, but he resigned over a master's degree scandal involving the governor's daughter.
