Local farmers in Mount Jackson learned about new technology that can save money and the environment Tuesday.

The Virginia Cooperative Extension demonstrated the efficiency of new equipment that injects manure and nitrogen into the ground instead of spreading them on the surface.

When on the surface, nearly half of the nitrogen evaporates, but by putting it underground, the chemical is contained.

With the price of nitrogen increasing, many local farmers are interested in using the new equipment.

Local farmer Steven Baker said, "I have a tanker and I'm looking to put injectors on my tanker. The thing about it is, I was able to demonstrate in my surroundings and see if it would work and yes it did work so we are going to take it to the next level right now."

Injecting the fertilizers also eliminates chemical runoff into surface water as well as decreasing the smell.
