Putnam County commissioners are considering an ordinance that would allow local authorities to impose fines of up to $100 on all-terrain vehicle riders caught on trails in county parks.

Scott Williamson, director of the county parks commission, said volunteers have devoted countless hours to building the trails. On a wet day, the trails can be wiped out with a few passes by ATV riders.

The parks commission has posted signs forbidding ATVs on the trails, but has no way of enforcing the ban.

An earlier draft ordinance was rejected by county commissioners as too sweeping in its provisions.

The parks commission will submit a new ordinance after its August 7 meeting.
