A tractor trailer carrying 44,000 pounds of used car batteries overturned on Route 33 Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened near Riverton in Pendleton County. Several of the batteries broke, spilling battery acid onto the roadway.

An eight mile stretch of the road was closed for several hours to allow HAZMAT crews to clean up the spill. That road is open again.

A HAZMAT crew from Harrisonburg was called to help with the situation.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, and West Virginia State Police are investigating to see if any charges will be filed.
