University of Virginia officials are working to make new students "alcohol-wise."

One orientation session this summer was devoted to alcohol abuse.

Incoming first-year students also are being asked to complete an hour-long online course focusing on binge drinking, sexual assault, alcohol poisoning and the dynamics of how alcohol works.

First-year students also are getting wallet-sized cards with the phone number of a cab company that will give students a ride home if they have a valid U.Va. ID card.

Susan Bruce, director of U.Va.'s Center for Alcohol and Substance Education, says students across the country die every year from alcohol poisoning. She says university officials don't want that to happen at U.Va.
