Fire crews had an early morning Wednesday when they responded to a three-alarm fire at a historic home in downtown Staunton around midnight.

The "Boden Residence" caught fire in the 200 block of East Beverly Street. Part of East Bevelry Street was closed near the intersection with Coalter Street.

Witnesses say an elderly couple lives in the home and were asleep when firefighters came inside and woke them. Neighbors report seeing lightning and heard a huge clap of thunder shortly before the fire started, but firefighters have not confirmed the cause of the fire.

The fire appears to be contained to the attic with water and smoke damage likely on the second floor. The homeowner, Lou Boden, says his parents live in an apartment inside the home.
