Proponents of historic area designation for the Good Counsel Friary in Morgantown are renewing their efforts.
The Monongalia County Commission recently rejected a proposal to create a historic district that includes the friary, even though the designation had been recommended by the county Landmarks Commission.
Supporters of the idea hope to persuade commissioners to change their mind. They're circulating petitions to designate the friary as the "Thoney Pietro Historic District" in recognition of the stone artisan whose talents are reflected in the castle-like building, the pool and other friary structures.
