Ford’s announcement that it will shut down its assembly plant in Norfolk is expected to have a ripple effect in North Carolina. An official points out that about 20 percent of the plant staff live in northeastern North Carolina. The assembly plant employs more than 24 hundred people and is one of Norfolk’s largest employers. Governor Kaine has appealed to company executives to keep the plant operational, to no avail. He said "I hope next week to sit down with a number of the workers and local officials to start talking about what we can do as a state to cushion this blow and to really double our efforts to continue to a successful announcement in the Hampton Roads area." The f-150 pickup truck assembly plant in Norfolk will close in 2008.Another ford plant in St. Paul, Minnesota will also be discontinued.
