The black bear captured Thursday night in Harrisonburg has been released back into the wild.

The yearling was found behind the L&S Diner in downtown Harrisonburg.

He was darted with a tranquillizer and taken for a medical exam.

Officials at the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries say the baby bear was given a clean bill of health and released Friday morning.

I was fortunate to witness the capture of the bear as it happened by my house. The authorities handled the capture in a very professional and humane manner. It was nice to know that the bear was found to be healthy and was later released.
