It's a fair decision, even if it's not a popular one. That's what Waynesboro's Planning Commission Chair Harry Colman said about voting unanimously to allow Sheetz to build a gas station on W. Main Street.
He explained Sheetz has agreed to build a brick building instead of a red and yellow one and include a retention pond, lower signs and dimmer lighting.
Even though some residents in surrounding neighborhoods have signed a petition against the gas station, Colman says Sheetz would not be any more injurious than other commercial uses of the space.
"This has always been a commercial corridor," he said. "This was always a commercial zone, we did not find a basis to deny it and had we denied it, something much worse could have been there."
City council is expected to cast the final votes in May.
