According to the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital, as many as 83,000 children are treated in the United States for burns each year.

Many of these children are left with scars that take a lifetime to heal. However, it's the scars on the inside that are often the hardest to heal.

Mid-Atlantic Burn Camp co-director Tonas Kalil says, "Most of them were fairly isolated. Burns are a very small group and a lot of children just didn't know a single burn survivor, adult or child.

He says that the after being discharged from the hospital, kids are often left to heal on their own.

"The problem was, there wasn't anything for them after they were discharged from the hospital," says Kalil.

One such child is Gregory Hammett who was left with permanent scars after spilling soup in his lap.

He says, "I think the biggest thing it effected was my self confidence, growing up, fairly low self-esteem"

Hammett's ending is a happy one. With his confidence restored, he is working on his Master's degree in accounting. That's just the kind of healing 13-year-old Anjali Dala is in the process of making.

She says, "Because I know people make fun, if they make fun, it's their problem. Not mine and I know I have more than what they say."

Dala is helping her friend Marissa Hoffman make this same kind of healing decision at the camp this week.

Hoffman says camp makes her feel beautiful.

She says, "Your so pretty like that. What did you say? I said she is so pretty. I love your hair; she just stole the words right out of my mouth."
