A 17-year-old has been convicted of killing a Virginia Commonwealth University student.

Howard Scott III entered Alford pleas to murder and five related charges as his trial was to begin in Richmond Circuit Court on Monday. The pleas mean he does not admit guilt but acknowledges there is sufficient evidence to convict him.

Scott is the first of three defendants to go to trial for the March 27 slaying of 19-year-old Tyler Binsted. Authorities believe Scott and Zsabriela Williams robbed and killed Binsted as he and his girlfriend walked in a city park.

A September 12 trial has been set for Williams. No trial date has been set for 19-year-old LaPrecious Nicole Austin, who allegedly drove the getaway car.

Scott faces up to three life terms when he is sentenced November 17.
