Harrisonburg Public Schools officials are recommending only minor changes to their policies after a pair of mock drills this month.

The school system held a mock intruder drill at Thomas Harrison Middle School on August 1 and a mock bus accident drill at James Madison University on August 6.

The second drill was held because of a crash in March where students were unsure of what to do.

Officials recommend that one person from the administration be the point person for all school staff in this type of incident. They say this will free up more time for the incident commander.

The mock intruder drill at the start of the month gave the schools a chance to coordinate with the Harrisonburg Police Department as well.

"The more we practice things, the better we are at them," says Craig Mackail, supervisor of research, planning, and operations for Harrisonburg's Public Schools. "And I think the school personnel really gained a lot from that, just seeing the police actually in action and to see what happens."

School officials say they're aiming to hold the drills again next summer.
